Parent Letter - Press Release

May 22nd, 2018
RE: Parent Meeting
Dear Somerset Families,
Thank you for your support at our parent meeting held on Friday, May 18th• As promised, included in this letter are responses to the "parking lot" questions asked during the closed session for parents. Please see below for next steps the school is committed to take going forward:
I) What methods are the school planning to take to ensure the scholars are safe?
Ms. Catalano has a meeting scheduled on Tuesday, May 22nd, at 12:00 pm with an off-duty police officer that will provide his service to us during dismissal, from now until the end of the school year. Additionally, Ms. Shelby, principal from Ballou, and Ms. Catalano have been working collaboratively to ensure we are in constant contact regarding any issues that may arise between the schools and also to ensure safe passage. Lastly, our dismissal support has been increased from our staff and will extend to Liffs comer store, compared to stopping at the corner of Wheeler Rd SE and Alabama Ave SE.
2) What will security look like in the upcoming school year?
Security will be increased for next school year. We are working on soliciting quotes from several agencies and will make our decision in the coming weeks. Once we determine which agency will provide security services for our school we will inform you all immediately.
3) Will our scholars who attend After School All Stars be safe when they leave the building?
Somerset and After School All Stars will continue to work together to ensure that any scholar remaining at the school for activities has safe passage. If your child is a bus rider, or walker, please contact Ms. Catalano at lcatalano@somersetprepdc.org so we can design a plan that ensure their safety.
4) Can parents attend meetings with city officials?
Yes, once we confirm dates and times for public meetings with city officials we will communicate to all of our families so you can attend.
5) Can we please have more in depth information during the robo calls and emails?
We do our best to communicate as much information as we are able to in certain situations. We also understand that the feeling of"not knowing" can cause anxiety and stress. Going forward we will make an effort to be more specific with the information we send out to put these worries at bay.
Attached with this letter is a press release that will be shared with several media sources. As a school community I am asking for you to help us share this information with your networks to provide clarity to the unfortunate events that occurred last week. Thank you for your ongoing support, we appreciate it more than you know!
